Senior Mens 3.5 Team at Districts (Elk Grove)

Posted by SSFTC on May 27, 2009

I am very sorry for posting this so late.  I forgot I took pictures!  These are some of the awesome guys of Orange Park’s 3.5 Senior Mens Team.  The District Championships were held in Elk Grove from April 17 to 19, 2009.  I came to watch them on Saturday only.  They came up just a tad short against a couple of tough teams but played well over all.

So Sweet!

Posted by SSFTC on April 12, 2009

Whoopie!!!  Orange Park’s 7.0 Mixed Team (captained by George Rodrigues) won their first playoff match against a strong Westlake team yesterday at Westlake’s home courts no less!  The victory couldn’t have been sweeter.  Last time they played, Westlake swept 0-3.  Revenge is so much sweeter when you take it to your opponents during a playoff match!

Nettie and Simon had very tough opponents and couldn’t get pass the guy’s overheads. Stan and Claudia played very well against their 4.0 female and 3.0 guy. Even though it looked bad for OP at times, they came through!

Mike and Lee also played against a 4.0 female and 3.0 guy team, although many would insist the guy ain’t no 3.0!  Nevertheless, with the deciding match on their shoulders, they came through in the 3rd set for The Win! They played great in tough windy conditions (not to mention overlooking bad line calls). Lee kept it in play in the back court and Mike took care of business on the short balls. Way to go, team!

Many thanks to those who came out to cheer for Orange Park (Lucy, George, Wendy, Tammy, Liz, Ed, Ernesto, etc). I think the noise and support unnerved their opponents. Their cheers were weak!

OK, don’t get cocky now…you have one more playoff match to go! Good Luck OP!

Senior Mens 3.5 Team – On to Districts!

Posted by SSFTC on March 9, 2009

Congratulations to Orange Park’s Senior 3.5 Mens Team! They just concluded a great season winning both playoff matches. In the second round of Playoffs, they beat a tough SFTC team on their turf 2-1! But it was so very close. Two matches went to tiebreakers with scores like 10-7 and 12-10!

Team Captain, Ben’s comments: George and I tried our best but ended up losing to two guys that served very well. We played in the No.1 spot, losing 6-2, 6-2. George and I felt demoralized. I was sitting up in the landing wondering if I blew this match. We were watching Greg and Mike not knowing what happened. They were sitting on the court a long time. We couldn’t tell by their body language whether they’d won or lost. When they finally came up to the landing, they told us they won a very close match. The scores were 5-7, 6-4, and 10-7! That gave us hope that we still had a chance to win the team match. But the nail-biting continued…

Last to finish at No.2 was Bill and Ed. The other team informed us that we had already lost the first set 5-7. So we had a MUST WIN situation on our hands! Bill and Ed pulled it out and won the second set 6-4. We all were watching and cheering as they played the Super Tiebreaker. Bill hit a shot down the line on Eric Morgenthaler for match point and then Abraham Yang put up a short lob for Ed to put the overhead away to win the match at 12-10!

Ed’s comment: I knew it was match point and I told myself NOT to screw it up but I had a brief second of fear that I might!

Congratulations to everyone on the Orange Park Senior team! They can hold their heads up high as they lived up to their name sake Orange Crush!

Next up – the District Championships, which will be held on April 17-19 at Laguna Creek Racquet Club, Elk Grove. If you’re able to go, do cheer the team on!

3/16/08 St Patrick’s Fun Day

Posted by choyarnold on April 24, 2008

We kicked off the year with an absolute, unreturnable ACE!  The weather was perfect, the tennis was lively and spirited, the food was fabulous as usuall, and the “social” camaraderie was just like old times.  It is always great to get together as club members as well as just a bunch of good friends.

There were 39 players for this event, including 31 men and 8 women.  Ladies, that nearly a 4:1 ratio, in your favor, mind you…hmmmm.  So Sherri, you only get to pick 4!!!  What’s a number between friends, anyway.  But that’s what’s so great about our new Next Court/Next Four Players system.  You can pick and choose who you want to play with.  Sherri and I don’t have to do anything.

The tennis was fierce and competitive all day and we saw a bunch of terrifc matches (and some kinda so-so, wake me up when it’s over type of matches).  But the thrill of the day, highlight of the day goes to Pepe and Martin (father/son lethal combo) pitted against the Deadly Duo called Ernesto and Anselmo.  Boy, was that some tremendous hitting or what?  That poor ball was just flying all over the court at speeds that simply amaze lil’ ol me.  Pops and little pop won 6-3, 6-3, but it seemed a lot closer than the scores indicates.  Oh, btw, Ernesto and Anselmo are two different people…some of you actually thought Ernesto was Anslemo and vice-versa.  The truth is out now…you can’t hide.

At the end of the day, the club got 4 new members and two guests said they would join too.  When guests play with our club it seems that they do eventually join.  Maybe because we’re such a friendly and competiitive club at the same time.  We challenge other clubs to beat our record of 30+ people every month at NO COST to our members.  What a mega deal.

We’d like to take a moment to have a shout out to Mike Yoneji, who couldn’t play due to an illness, but came out nevertheless to cheer his buddies on to victory.  Mike also helped out in shopping with Sherri and I for the delicious deli lunch.  Mike couldn’t play but his spirit was there competing with da boys (and da girls, too).

Finally, a big round of applause for those of you who helped clean the courts, helped set up, and helped with the clean up.  You are greatly appreciated.

On a closing note, a final big THANKS to everyone who continue to bring goodies to all of our events…especially the taste like chicken guys.  You know those tasty little chicken wings and drumettes that Gerald and da boys bring.  Anyway…enjoy and see you all at the next event.

4. Name one of your favorite movies—Lord of the Rings – can’t even remember how many times I’ve watched it – drives George nuts.

5. Name your favorite author, book or magazine—A fan of Agatha Christie, but nowadays don’t really have time to read :<

6. Name your best vacation location—A tennis resort with great food and tennis

7. Besides tennis, what else are you passionate about?—Between tennis, work, eat and sleep, don’t have much time left for anything :<

8. How long have you been playing this game of tennis?—I’ve been free-swinging the tennis racquet with George and family for awhile but didn’t really start to learn to play to win until my 2005 USTA league with the OP 3.5 ladies.

9. Name one of your favorite restaurants—I don’t really have one favorite restaurant. Most of my favorite and affordable restaurants are in the Sunset Area, SF. For example, there is Lotus at Noriega (I think it’s 22nd Ave) where they serve really good spicy beef noodles; a couple blocks away is Noriega Teriyaki where they have good sushi. Another one is San Tung at 10th Irving – they offer excellent spicy noodles and dishes.

10. What kind of food do you like best?—All kinds but spicy food ranks high up on the list.
